Eine Sonderausstellung des Ägyptischen Museums und Papyrussammlung

The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in cooperation with the Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA) will present the special exhibition "Elephantine" from April 2024. This exhibition, the only one of its kind in the world, will show an extensive selection of documents from the island on the Nile, including top international artefacts.

The Nile Island Elephantine will be brought to life on the Museum Island.

Elephantine is an island on the Nile on Egypt's southern border. This trading and military centre was home to a uniquely diverse multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-religious population.

It is the only place in the world where cultural history can be "read" from written sources over a period of 4,000 years. Thousands of texts are written on papyrus or clay fragments in ten different languages and scripts (including hieroglyphics, Aramaic, Coptic and Arabic).

They are now preserved in 60 collections in 24 countries and have been deciphered, translated and digitally catalogued in Berlin as part of a major European research project. The diverse content of the texts is contextualised by archaeological finds and interpreted from a contemporary perspective. The Nile island of Elephantine can be experienced on the Museum Island.
