From Oxford to Little America
Dahlem has always been one of the most sought-after spots in Berlin – and home to many embassies. The villas and parkland around the Seminaris CampusHotel Berlin continue to bear witness to this history and its past dreams. At the turn of the 20th century, plans were afoot to turn it into a research hub, the ‘German Oxford’. Parts of the university, research institutes, museums and other educational institutions were set to move to the site. And it’s true that many of the world’s scientific innovations have come from Dahlem, from nuclear fission to modern genetics. It’s also home to the notable Max-Planck-Gesellschaft research campus and part of the Freie Universität.
Of course, the Second World War brought plans for a science hub on the site south-west of Berlin crashing to the ground. It wasn’t until the city was divided and the foundation of the Free University that the idea came back around – resulting in unique buildings from Norman Foster and the striking Henry Ford Building, whose name is a nod to the more recent history of the area occasionally known as ‘Little America’.
The Dreipfuhl estate built for American officers after the war still recalls a 1950s US suburb, while the Outpost cinema embodies the spirit of American culture on Clayallee in Berlin. That’s where you’ll find the Allied Museum, with its powerful permanent exhibition on 50 years of the Allies in Berlin. Right opposite the hotel, meanwhile, you’ll find the Museum of European Cultures, a Berlin hidden gem celebrating the diversity of life in Europe.
