Park Plaza Berlin in Charlottenburg

Trendy art hotel meets Berlin City West

Pop goes Berlin: the Park Plaza Berlin is practically a work of art in its own right. Inspired by the unmistakable genius of Andy Warhol, this hotel features many works created and inspired by the iconic pop artist himself. This makes it the perfect starting point to explore the gems of the Berlin art scene in City West. Its central location is within touching distance of cultural highlights near Breitscheidplatz and the world-famous Kurfürstendamm – or Kudamm, as it’s affectionately known.

The Park Plaza Berlin is the perfect spot for culture vultures to land in the capital. The building is almost as much a gallery as it is a hotel – inspired from top to bottom by pop art icon Andy Warhol, it showcases over 250 works of art and pictures of his life and times. Located on Lietzenburger Straße in Berlin’s sophisticated Charlottenburg district, just 300 m from the Kurfürstendamm – Berlin’s most iconic shopping street, fondly known as Kudamm – it offers surroundings to match the stylish interior. A stone’s throw from the vibrant boutiques, restaurants and attractions in central City West, it’s got plenty to keep artsy visitors occupied on a Berlin city break.

With all kinds of attractions within walking distance – including buzzing Kudamm, lively Ludwigkirchplatz, sophisticated Savignyplatz, trendy Olivaer Platz and Breitscheidplatz with its memorial church – and bike hire available from the hotel, you’re in prime position to discover the city’s stylish side. Grab breakfast from the restaurant and head out for a long day’s shopping and sightseeing – before heading back to sample cocktails and sophisticated New York flair at the FACTORY Bar or in the hotel gym and sauna.

Shop pop: discover the art of design on a shopping trip

Pop art is a celebration of contemporary culture – and you can get into the spirit with a browse around Berlin’s most celebrated modern shopping district. City West turns shopping into an art form. It’s famed for exclusive boutiques and shopping centres with a twist – like the Bikinihaus on Breitscheidplatz, a modern concept shopping mall in an iconic listed building. Of course, Kudamm is at the heart of the action – just a stone’s throw from the hotel and the ideal spot to stroll in style. West of the hotel, you’ll find the flagship stores for world-famous designers, while heading east towards Breitscheidplatz, you’ll find all the big-name brands. Stop off at cafés along the way for a break between buys.

If we’re talking icons – whether pop art or shopping – they don’t come much bigger than the Kaufhaus des Westens, better known as KaDeWe. Opened in 1907, KaDeWe is one of Europe’s biggest department stores – and a top stop to shop when visiting Berlin.

Park Plaza Berlin: the perfect base to explore Berlin art and culture

With its artsy interior and prime location in the heart of City West’s cultural scene, the Park Plaza Berlin is the perfect place to discover the finest art in Berlin like a local. Combine your stay with a visit to some of the finest local galleries and museums of art and design. About 500 m from the hotel, in a lovely villa on Fasanenstraße, visitors will find the Käthe Kollwitz Museum showcasing works from the legendary artist and sculptor. Just 15 minutes’ walk away on Ernst-Reuter-Platz, you’ll also find the temporary Bauhaus-Archiv, showcasing sculpture, paintings, photography, furniture and more from the avant-garde Bauhaus school. At Zoologischer Garten station, a similar distance from the hotel, you can check out temporary exhibitions of international photography at C/O Berlin in the listed Amerika-Haus building.

Arts and culture aren’t only in 2D, of course. City West is also a fabulous spot for fans of the theatre, with a wide array of establishments showcasing the dramatic arts in all their glory. These include the Renaissance-Theater, staging challenging modern productions in magnificent Art Deco surrounds, and the Schaubühne on Lehniner Platz, housed in a former cinema built by Erich Mendelsohn in 1928. Less than 10 minutes’ walk away, you’ll find Bar jeder Vernunft, where cabaret and musical performances take place in an Art Nouveau mirrored tent. For those who prefer the cinematic arts, the Delphi Filmpalast am Zoo is the perfect backdrop for a night at the movies in an old-style 1928 building that doubles as a venue for the Berlinale film festival.

Kids aim high! No tree or hill is a high enough obstacle for them. Bouldering is free-climbing, but with a net and double floor. Although the climbers aren't attached to a rope to stop them from falling, thick mats on the floor protect them from being injured, thus allaying the worries of parents.

Eating well is an art all of its own in chic City West. Foodies aren’t limited to the (admittedly delicious) fare on offer at the Park Plaza Berlin. Those who prefer to roam a little further afield will find plenty to delight them on the stylish streets off Lietzenburger Straße. The food here is as cosmopolitan as the surroundings – check out Dudu 31, an Asian restaurant just a stone’s throw from the hotel, and the elegant Franco-German Diekmann. For flavours of the Middle East, check out Marooush, practically on the hotel’s doorstep.

For culture vultures still hungry for a taste of the Berlin art scene, stop by the Paris Bar. Just 10 minutes’ walk from the hotel, this restaurant is renowned as a meeting place for artists and film-makers – with an inspiring atmosphere and creative French bistro cuisine to boot.

If that’s not hip enough for you, take a stroll down to the charming Ludwigkirchplatz and Savignyplatz, two delightful little spots around 400 and 900 m from the hotel respectively. On Savignyplatz, the bakery Zeit für Brot focuses on the traditional art of baking. Meanwhile, Ludwigkirchplatz is a vibrant square featuring a brick church, surrounded by a selection of elegant eateries. New culinary heights can be found even in the most unexpected places: head up to the sixth floor of the KaDeWe department store on Kudamm for a range of restaurants serving fine cuisine – they’ve even got caviar.
