From Schinkel to Foster: Discover Berlin’s most impressive buildings
New life from old ruins: Berlin constructed numerous factories, industrial complexes and breweries during the Industrial Revolution.
One of the largest industrial sites in Berlin at its time were the factory premises of the AEG electronics group in Humboldthain. Even though only part of the complex remains today, you can still feel the significance it once had. The Buchändlerhof substation is an outstanding example of the culture of industrial construction in the 1920s, and it become famous after reunification as the E-Werk techno club. Today there is a centre for contemporary art in the old Kindl brewery. You can also experience current art and creativity in the Malzfabrik and the Kühlhaus. These days the Kulturbrauerei also brews culture rather than beer, with its theatres, clubs and cinemas.
