In his recent work, "Weltenbrand" (2023), renowned historian Richard Overy paints a new, global picture of World War II: as a global, imperialist conflict in which not only the Axis powers, but also the Allies, strove to expand their power.
Overy begins his analysis earlier than usual – in 1931 with Japan's invasion of Manchuria – and focuses more sharply on the Pacific War. With impressive depth, he describes the causes, course, and consequences of the war, which marked the end of the imperialist era.
The book has received international awards, including the Duke of Wellington Medal for Military History, and is a New York Times bestseller.
- Richard Overy is Professor of Modern History at the University of Exeter and is considered one of the leading experts on World War II.
- Dieter Pohl, Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Klagenfurt, complements the evening with current research perspectives.
