Showing by Sheena McGrandles in the frame of Tanznacht Berlin 2025: Vocal Affairs

What is work if it produces nothing more than the appearance of order? Can people ever escape work? And if work is an endless process, does it remain an escape route?

In the empty hall of the Heizhaus, “WORK IT OUT” unfolds as a duet between the performer Martin Hansen and the musician Marta Forsberg. The choreographic sonic essay that leans into the formal logics of ballet and Irish step dance, stages a figure at work—on work.

Between protest and poetry, physical essay and speculative fiction, “WORK IT OUT” confronts the mythologies and materialities of labour — not just as employment, but as ideology, identity and desire. Through rhythm, repetition, autofiction, and textual fragments “WORK IT OUT” creates a rupture and transforms into an endless rehearsal — a refusal to resolve.

*“WORK IT OUT” is a precursor to “TOIL” : A Ballet on Work which premieres at HAU 2 in December 2025.
