Paths and Wrong Paths – Fashion not only for women
Stand out with clothing? Create a fashion trend? Who hasn't experienced this? More than 500 years ago, men and women tried to stand out by wearing expensive or special clothing. The city authorities then issued dress codes to put a stop to waste.
In the early 16th century, Germans copied the fashions of other European regions. Some contemporaries complained that their compatriots could no longer be recognized by their traditional costumes because they also combined clothing styles with each other. People wore whatever they liked.
The clothing later regarded as "German costume" with numerous slits, especially on the sleeves and trousers, was originally worn by mercenaries. Some parts of this "work clothing" found their way into fashion.
Nevertheless, with increasing strictness, care was taken to ensure that residents in town and country dressed according to their status and did not wear the "wrong" colors and fabrics.
From 1550 onwards, a devil got into the men's pants, to whom the Brandenburg priest Andreas Musculus dedicated a polemic.
Using selected Cranach paintings, fashion in the early modern period is traced. Examples of clothing components brought along give an insight into clothing and clothing layers of this time.
