The Westminster 135th Grand Prix of Berlin is without question the highlight of the Berlin horse racing season and has been Germany's best horse race four times since 2011.
Under the patronage of the Governing Mayor of Berlin Kai Wegner, Europe's best Grand Prix gallopers take to the 2,400 metre start of the international Group I championship race, which has a purse of 155,000 euros. The supporting programme also meets the highest standards. Three international Listed races, the Fliegerpreis (1,200m G.B.), the Stutenpreis (1,800m) and the Steherpreis (2,800m) stand out.
In 2011, the Grand Prix of Berlin was held at its birthplace Hoppegarten for the first time since 1945, and since then the race has regularly caused a sensation - it has been the best race in Germany four times since then according to the international racing authorities, with Danedream (winner 2011), Torquator Tasso (winner 2020) and Alpinista (winner 2021) three Berlin winners went on to win the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, the most famous race in the world. The 2022 winner Rebel's Romance won the Breeders' Cup Turf, one of the most valuable races in the USA.
Hoppegarten is the perfect summer outing for friends, families and kids - the athletic thoroughbreds can be admired up close in the lead ring or at 60 kilometres per hour on the home straight.
The youngest horse racing fans can win small prizes in a children's fun bet or test their jockeying talent with a pony ride. Plenty of energy can be burned off on the bouncy castle and trampoline, while face painting and jewelry making are other highlights. Immediately after the awards ceremony in the Florida Ice Race, the winning jockey will be weighed in ice, and the portions will then be distributed to all the children.
Grandstand II will feature works from the Westminster Art Collection by prominent artists from Ukraine, Poland, and Germany.
