Three dance pieces by asteroids / james finnemore, oleg stepanov, shannon gillen.

james finnemore: a western

the idea of this chorographic work is to leave the outside outside. in collaboration with composer joel harries, the concepts of physical separation and literal boundaries are explored. what elements form a coherent inside that pushes against the outside? a second focus of this dance research is on the metaphysical aspects of inside and outside: how do belonging and aspects of opposition work?

The need for an inner, exclusive, excluding mental space is explored in order to form an identity. The work describes a fundamental human need - to create a safe place for the body and mind to rest, and to protect that place from the outside world, no matter what.

british dance artist james finnemore has extensive international experience working with the hofesh shechter company, olivier dubois, the gary clarke company, carte blanche and punchdrunks theatre company, among others. he has also taught in various dance institutions and companies, given workshops and restaged the hofesh shechter company's repertoire. in addition to his career as a performer, he develops his own choreographies, including his own full-length piece "terra" as part of his partnership with the point and as part of the place's hot house project.

oleg stepanov: another sorts of little deaths

oleg stepanov's creations focus on the body and space. they focus on people and their complexities and contradictions, always keeping an eye on the potential of the people with whom he works creatively. ideas are developed and directions are shown, without foregoing unexpected turns and changes. bodies are a reflection of events in the world, carrying the past and the present within them, and interesting and exciting perspectives emerge from their interaction.

Bodies are a reflection of what is happening in the world, carrying past and present, and interesting and exciting perspectives emerge from their interplay.

humour coexists with sadness, illusion with reality, poetry with politics, fullness with emptiness. the creative process is initially based on improvisation and research, and then moves towards composition and choreography; it includes aspects of theatrical and performative practice. a playful space is created, without judgement or prejudice; a space open to failure and numerous attempts to tame what is found.

oleg stepanov is a dance artist and choreographer. as a dancer, he was a member of the gothenburg dance company ensemble for three years and has now been with the pina bausch dance theatre in wuppertal for seven years. he has worked with choreographers and directors such as dimitris papioannou, saburo teshigawara, sidi larbi cherkaoui, alan lucien oyen, richard siegal, bobbi jene smith and others. dimitris papaioannou, saburo teshigawara, sidi larbi cherkaoui, alan lucien oyen, richard siegal, bobbi jene smith, constanza macras, uri ivgi & johan greben. oleg actively supports dance research practices, creates music and films. his choreographic language and method is based on the observation of the body in space and the space in the body. he understands movement as a synthesis between the architecture and biomechanics of the body and a sensitive and sensual inner journey. in his creative work it is important for him to start from and imagine that the body is simultaneously endowed with the properties of the subject and the object and that it exists in space-time between pure potentials and a multiplicity of choices.

shannon gillen: countdown

the piece is about time; how we use it, waste it, sell it, beg for it and are consumed by it again and again. in a rigorous process of collaborative movement and partnering principles, we look time in the face to find out who and what we are. out of a maelstrom of situations, feelings and characters, crazy and wild movements emerge, manifesting themselves in fiery physical and psychological challenges as well as in resurrections. from a maelstrom of situations, feelings and characters emerge crazy and wild movements, manifesting in fiery physical and psychological challenges as well as farewells and resurrections. a final glimpse of time that remains and yet lasts forever. raw physical movements inform the collaborative artistic process; unapologetically personal, each work treads a terrain of human failure, triumph and will.
