Expert guided tour with Dr. Dirk Dorsemagen, Head of Building Construction, Department of Architecture, SPSG

In 1757, Frederick II had the Neptune Grotto built in the eastern pleasure garden of Sanssouci as an obligatory structure of the late Baroque garden in a secluded area surrounded by dense woodland. With the operation of the trick fountains from 1842, Frederick William IV made structural additions and modulated the garden parterre in the Romantic sense.

The surrounding area was enriched with Italianate garden features. Following the completion of the restoration work carried out since 2015-2018, the grotto with its precious surfaces inside and out is now resplendent with the forms of the restored parterre from the mid-19th century.

During the guided tour, you can take a closer look at this special building with Dr. Dirk Dorsemagen, who was the project manager for the restoration of the Neptune Grotto, and learn lots of interesting facts about it.
