On 27 February 2025, the Akademie der Künste will open the exhibition ‘Ein Dorf 1950–2022. Ute Mahler, Werner Mahler and Ludwig Schirmer’ at Hanseatenweg.

The long-term project of the three photographers started in Berka, Thuringia, but reaches far beyond the borders of this village.

The works address political and social changes, technical developments, fashions and individual life stories. More than 150 photographs create a dense web of personal destinies and global events, autobiographical elements and artistic perspectives.

The exhibition raises questions ranging from home and childhood to leaving and returning, as well as change and continuity. It shows a multi-layered portrait of a place over a period of 70 years. The exhibition was curated by Marit Lena Herrmann.

Running parallel to ‘One Village’ at Hanseatenweg is the exhibition ‘was zwischen uns steht. Fotografie als Medium der Chronik’ (what stands between us. Photography as a medium of chronicle), the central festival exhibition of EMOP Berlin – European Month of Photography 2025.
