The Italian-German artist Valentina Murabito (*1981, Giarre, Italy) is showing her latest works in her exhibition "La donna del mare". In it, she playfully and intuitively deals with themes from nature, mythology and literature.
For two decades, Valentina Murabito has been experimenting with complex photographic techniques in her studio. She exposes various materials such as wood, steel and concrete and changes the image surfaces to create three-dimensional works of art. In the darkroom, she develops analogue photographs of imaginative creatures that she took in various historical locations.
The exhibition title and the central work are inspired by Henrik Ibsen's drama "The Lady from the Sea" from 1888.
Valentina Murabito's works combine fiction and reality, ancient myths and political philosophy, as well as art and biopolitics. She uses unusual forms of representation and blurs the boundaries between painting, sculpture and photography. Her analogue photographs are created in a time-intensive process that is reminiscent of the pioneers of early photography such as Edward Muybridge.
