FROM Bastian Kraft and ensemble AFTER Hans Christian Andersen
"I never dreamed of so much happiness when I was the ugly little duckling." In Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales you often come across transformations: the little mermaid transforms into a human, the ugly duckling into a proud swan. The fact that these transformations are also a masked play with gender and sexuality is the starting point for a project that compares Andersen's fairy tales with the biographies of Berlin drag queens.
These protagonists of urban nightlife turn the play with gender roles into a liberating spectacle. They move on the dazzling border between shameless self-expression and subcultural sense of mission. The transformation using make-up and wigs not only produces a new self, but also a new self-confidence. The fictional character created in this way is the proud swan, in whose form the ugly duckling can face the world.
Bastian Kraft was awarded the Ehrenstöckel by Travestie for Germany in 2019 for his production ugly duckling.
All performances will be shown with English surtitles.
Note: Strobe lights are used in the performance.
