Berlin has always been a hotbed of subcultures – even and especially during the time of the Wall. In its shadow, West Berlin became an island for artists, dropouts, and avant-gardists. In the East, similar scenes flourished more or less in secret. But despite the planned economy and state control, they developed into a dazzling parallel world.
In conversation with Marion Brasch, director Annekatrin Hendel (East) and photographer Christian Schulz (West) look at style, scenes, and rebellions on both sides of the Wall.
