Workshop - Modul 3: Schwammstadt

Tiny forests, also known as microforests, are small, densely planted forests that serve as climate buffers, carbon reservoirs and green oases in urban areas.

The concept, developed by Japanese ecologist Akira Miyawaki in the 1970s, makes it possible to create self-sustaining habitats in a small area. Many of these microforests are created in community planting campaigns by volunteers or by individuals and associations - they are a low-threshold way of taking action for the climate and making cities greener.

In a three-part series of workshops, which can also be taken individually, we invite you to familiarise yourself with this exciting concept. We will shed light on the ecological basis of Tiny Forests, the connection to permaculture and examine opportunities for implementation in Berlin.

This module focuses on Berlin conditions - what can Tiny Forests contribute to Berlin's water balance and the ‘sponge city’ strategy, for example, in which rainwater is better utilised?

A guest from the Rainwater Agency provides insights into water management and the importance of urban green spaces for the water balance. We explore the neighbourhood in search of potentially suitable brownfield sites.
