THE TIME MACHINE, a jazz quartet playing on period instruments, and the French-American group SLEEPING ANIMALS are on the programme for the first evening of Jazzdor Berlin.

THE TIME MACHINE
Jazz quartet playing on period instruments
Based on the novel by H.G. Wells (FR)
David Chevallier theorbo, baroque guitar | Rose Dehors sackbut, Renaissance trombone | Etienne Manchon harpsichord | Atsushi Sakaï viola da gamba

Inspired by H.G. Wells' novel “The Time Machine”, which questions our relationship to time, David Chevallier's quartet combines contemporary jazz with 17th-century instruments. The band follows the structure of Wells' novel, with each chapter providing the basis for composition and improvisation.
The creative interplay of exclusively baroque instruments gives rise to a completely new and ultimately timeless sound.

SLEEPING ANIMALS - CRÉATION
(FR + USA) Sarah Murcia double bass | Mat Maneri viola | Bruno Ducret cello | Christophe Lavergne drums

Together with Mat Maneri, Christophe Lavergne and Bruno Ducret (who, by the way, is the son of Marc Ducret and Hélène Labarrière), double bassist Sarah Murcia has created ‘Sleeping Animals’, a project involving the unusual combination of string instruments and drums.
She takes a close look at microtonality, polyrhythmics and influences from free jazz and punk rock.
A unique quartet, powerful and delicate at the same time, in which each of the musicians develops a constantly changing language that blurs the boundaries between form and improvisation.
