Thuringia votes: Will the AfD scandals have an impact on the state elections on September 1, 2024? The AfD came away empty-handed in the runoff elections in the local elections in June for the Thuringian district administrator posts, with the CDU and SPD in particular now providing the district administrators.

The elections are seen as a mood test for the state elections in September. In the European elections taking place at the same time, however, the AfD received almost a third of the votes in Thuringia.

After the election, the focus will be on the election result, its consequences and a question will be discussed:

What actually happens when authoritarian-populist parties get their hands on state power?

In Thuringia, the presidents of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the police are so-called political officials - and this poses great risks: future governments could use the security authorities against their opponents. What should we do?

We want to discuss the situation after the elections with Thuringia's top constitutional protection officer, Stephan Kramer, but also an analysis of the results of the research project "Thuringia Project".

This project was initiated by the Constitutional Blog on the resilience of democracy and the rule of law throughout Germany and ends with the state elections.

Stephan J. Kramer, President of the Thuringian State Parliament

Stephan Lenz, CDU member of the Berlin State Parliament
