Not far from Berlin, the Oder forms the border with Poland. It is one of the last European rivers that allows fish and other animals to migrate more than 500 km to the coast without barriers. The Oder's exceptional biodiversity is recognized throughout Europe, which is why numerous areas are protected.
In 2022, the Oder hit the headlines due to a massive fish kill as a result of an environmental disaster, which sparked new discussions about the future of its ecosystem.
Is the Oder in danger?
The international initiative "Time for the Oder" brings together three river alliances of civil society organizations that are committed to the permanent protection of the Oder and its catchment areas for the people of the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland and Europe.
The alliance speaks out against the construction of the international waterway E30 and promotes sustainable development in the Oder region.
An evening of lectures and discussions with Theresa Wagner, project coordinator for Oder protection at the German Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation (BUND).
