Du Miel, de Soleil, et de l’Or is a monodrama originally written in Arabic (Syria), produced and premiered in Tunisia in 2021. It is based in particular on the novel Sans famille by Hector Malot, which was transferred to contemporary reality by the Syrian author, director and actor Rémi Sarmini by making it an element of his narrative.
In collaboration with the playwright Yasser Abu Shaqra, Rémi Sarmini tells of his journey - in the opposite direction of the Arab Spring, from Tunisia to Syria - in 2016, his wanderings around the world in search of a safe place to live and work.
Rémi fled the war in Damascus when he was just completing his theater training and starting his career as an actor. His search is linked on the one hand to his "minority status" as a migrant and refugee, and on the other to his sexual orientation and the impossibility of living his love openly.
The team wants to apply the methods of the European laboratory Instant MIX for "translating by doing" and test two different versions of the text without surtitles for Germany and France, each containing German and French and featuring a local actor (in Berlin) and an actress (in Paris). This proposal was submitted and selected as part of the Perform Europe program to experiment with more inclusive and sustainable forms of touring.
In both countries there is a translator and a dramaturge who will work with the Tunisian-Syrian team to implement the bilingual version. In Germany, the dramaturge Henning Bochert is a founding member of Drama Panorama: Forum für Übersetzung und Theater e. V., in France it is Anne Bérélowitch, founder of Instant Mix and specialist in multilingual dramaturgy.
In October 2024, during a first research stay in Brussels, four scenes (out of the twelve in the entire play) were selected that they will work on and perform as models in Berlin in April and in Paris in June 2025. Through the dramaturgical work on these scenes, they were able to define the role(s) of the second person on stage, their status and textual share.
During the work periods in Berlin in the spring and Paris in the summer, we will work on these new bilingual versions and take advantage of all the possibilities opened up by the presence of the second actor. This will probably lead them to further revise the text, as they want to keep the door open for repeated developments.
