Damga Üzerine: Toplumsal Dışlanmanın Tarihi ve Bugünü Egemen Kalyon'dan
The term stigma was first used in ancient Greece to describe physical markings used to identify individuals deemed "unusual and morally inferior" by society. These marks were inscribed on slaves, criminals, or traitors and were considered a means of excluding them from society. Today, stigma is more than a physical mark; it refers to the forms of social exclusion people face because of their identity, origin, and social status.
This session will discuss the historical development of the concept of stigma, types of social stigma, and strategies developed by stigmatized individuals or communities to combat it. In the context of LGBTQ+ and immigration, the causes of social stigma, its reproduction through micro-interactions in daily life, and its use as a policy tool by governments will be discussed.
Speaker Egemen Kalyon – After graduating from the Department of Theater Criticism and Dramaturgy at Istanbul University, he wrote his master's thesis on social stigma at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. He continues his work as a dramaturge and academic at Mekan Artı, Tiyatro Berlin, and Cabinet Novus.
