Malakoff Kowalski, Igor Levit, Chilly Gonzales, Johanna Summer
"Songs With Words" is the title of the new album by Malakoff Kowalski as a singer, accompanied by the pianists Igor Levit, Johanna Summer and Chilly Gonzales. The work combines miniatures by classical composers with sung American poems by Allen Ginsberg.
Inspired by Mendelssohn's "Songs Without Words", this extraordinary quartet creates a new world of sound - possibly even a completely new musical genre that has never existed before in classical music, jazz or pop.
The album includes twelve new singer-songwriter pieces that are stylistically reminiscent of Tom Waits, Jim Morrison or David Bowie and at the same time create a connection to Bill Evans, Kurt Weill or Michel Legrand. The timeless, vulnerable and introspective beat poetry of Allen Ginsberg merges with the works of Frédéric Chopin, Robert Schumann, Aram Khachaturian, Maurice Ravel, Edvard Grieg, Amy Beach, Germaine Tailleferre, Claude Debussy and Gabriel Fauré. In this artistic montage process, Ginsberg's poems are converted into song lyrics almost unchanged - word for word, line for line. The restrained, introspective singing precisely follows the motifs and themes of the piano, which in turn sounds largely in its original form.
In addition to the Songs With Words, Igor Levit, Johanna Summer, Chilly Gonzales and Malakoff Kowalski will present other selected solo piano pieces this evening.
