concert by Jaroslav Hutka

The Czech singer-songwriter Jaroslav Hutka became famous with songs such as Náměšt. On November 5th, the Berlin Wall Foundation is inviting people to a concert with him.

The Czech singer-songwriter and Charter 77 signatory Jaroslav Hutka had to spend eleven years in exile in Holland and Germany. During the "Velvet Revolution" he returned to Prague in November 1989. He was denied entry at the airport for hours. His friends organized a demonstration and he was finally allowed to enter. He drove straight from Prague airport to the mass demonstration on the Letná Plateau, where his friends Václav Havel and Jiří Dienstbier were already waiting for him in the stands.

Jaroslav Hutka's records had been banned since the mid-1970s. Since he was forced into exile in 1978, those in power had tried to erase the memory of him.

And then the surprise: a million people joined in with Hutka's peaceful and gentle songs on Prague's Letná Plateau. The military was ready to shoot on that day - November 25, 1989. Hutka's songs made the atmosphere so peaceful that violent actions became impossible. Václav Havel later told him that his songs had saved the revolution.
