Reflections on light & sound

DARK MATTER expands its universe: Opening of the new exhibition hall TRANSFORMATOR with the art installation SKALAR.

A new chapter for the Berlin art scene begins: From 28 March 2025, the grounds of the Museum of Light and Media Art DARK MATTER will be expanded to include the new TRANSFORMATOR hall.

For the first exhibition in this spectacular new space, the internationally acclaimed light art work SKALAR by Christopher Bauder and Kangding Ray will return to Berlin after seven years of touring the world.

DARK MATTER: A growing cosmos of light art by Christopher Bauder

From 28 March 2025, the DARK MATTER concept will undergo a decisive development: the site on Köpenicker Chaussee in Rummelsburg, which previously consisted of the permanent exhibition and the seasonally used outdoor area, will be expanded to include the new large-format exhibition and event space TRANSFORMATOR.

To make it easier to find your way around the extensive grounds between the venues, the already established exhibition areas will also be given new names: The permanent exhibition with seven rooms and some interactive light artworks will in future be called KOLLEKTION, the outdoor area FREIRAUM.

DARK MATTER was created by the internationally active light and media artist Christopher Bauder. With KOLLEKTION, he is giving some of his artworks from over 20 years of work a permanent home in Berlin. Many of the works on display have already been shown around the world before
being brought together in a permanent exhibition with the opening of DARK MATTER in Berlin.

SKALAR | REFLECTIONS ON LIGHT & SOUND | CHRISTOPHER BAUDER & KANGDING RAY

Numerous new works by Christopher Bauder, his team and musical collaborators have already been presented in the FREIRAUM outdoor area in recent years. His seasonal exhibition series SOMMERLIGHTS and WINTERLIGHTS are very popular with the public. The concept of regularly changing art installations will now be continued in both FREIRAUM and TRANSFORMATOR.

TRANSFORMATOR: A cooperation with BEW

With the TRANSFORMATOR, DARK MATTER, in cooperation with its neighbour BEW (Berliner Energie und Wärme), is taking over an imposing historic steel girder hall with a lot of Berlin industrial charm and corresponding patina in the vicinity of the Klingenberg cogeneration plant. Together they are creating a unique venue for art and culture in Lichtenberg. The hall is located directly next to the permanent exhibition and expands the artistic spectrum of DARK MATTER with a flexible, versatile space for large-scale installations and events. With a ceiling height of 10 metres and a floor area of over 1,000 square metres, the hall offers an ideal basis for realising Bauder's large-format light art and accompanying events in various formats, also together with other artists at the DARK MATTER location.
