This exhibition is dedicated to the two groups of works ‘Silence’ and ‘Mimesis’ by Gabriela Torres Ruiz, which were created in recent years. Both series consist of pairs or groups of images that are related to each other. By bringing these groups of works together spatially, both the diversity of their formal approaches and their thematic connection become clear.
SILENCE (2009–2015)
In the series ‘Silence’, landscapes and interiors are juxtaposed in diptychs that are connected by the interplay of light, colour and space. The motifs shown, such as the decay of buildings in contrast to mountain and forest landscapes, illustrate the cycle between architecture and nature reclaiming its space. These corresponding images not only reveal a formal affinity in colour nuances and textures, but also illustrate their interaction in terms of content.
MIMESIS (2017–2021)
How can art help us perceive the complexity of nature? And how can it foster empathy for other life forms and an awareness of the balance between humans and nature? In her series, Gabriela Torres Ruiz shows that ‘nature’ and ‘culture’, often perceived as opposites, have a common origin.
Inspired by Prof. Adrian Bejan's theory ‘The Constructal Law’, she explores the flow patterns that determine the structure of the universe. These patterns can be found in rivers, neuronal networks, lightning, lungs and in the growth forms of plants. ‘Every flow architecture on earth follows the natural urge to flow more easily. Their evolution is aimed at minimising resistance and achieving equilibrium.’
