Stefano Taiuti • Butoh Tanz Workshop

Butoh is an avant-garde dance and a philosophy of movement, born in Japan in the 1960s and spreading across the West over the last 40 years. Free from fixed forms or music, Butoh is about the body—the organic, unproductive, living body.

The body is a battlefield, where institutionalized culture seeks to impose obedience, yet it remains our one true possession, yearning for freedom beyond societal norms.

At its core, Butoh is about feeling. It invites deep listening—not using the body, but allowing it to reconnect with its archaic memory and the energies buried beneath the surface of its conditioned existence. Tetsumi Hijikata, Butoh’s founder, called it the “dance of darkness,” a rebellion of the flesh.

Society marginalizes the fragile, the old, the ill, the odd, while glorifying an efficient, productive body. Butoh reclaims slowness, stillness, and sick moves, bringing the unseen back to center stage.

This will explore Butoh’s physical and imaginative landscapes through guided exercises, culminating in a collective performance open to the public. No prior experience is required—only a willingness to immerse yourself and challenge deep-seated movement and mental habits.

Led by Stefano Taiuti (Rome, 1967) – Butoh dancer, performer, movement teacher, and body therapist. He lives in Berlin and has explored movement since the late 1980s. In his work, he blends Western and Eastern theatrical traditions across theater, clubs, video performances, and site-specific installations. For him, the body is a spiritual mechanism; his work investigates movement as a tool for experience and altered states of consciousness.
