Great cinema at the Computer Games Museum

A new temporary exhibition has opened at the Computer Games Museum. Under the title Screen/Play, part of the museum has been transformed into a cinema hall, in which the media convergence between film and computer games - and beyond these two media - is highlighted.

A selection of exhibits will be used to spotlight individual aspects of the reciprocal relationship between these two media. 15 game stations invite visitors to immerse themselves in various forms of film-related games.

The green Computerspace machine is one of the best-known exhibits in the permanent exhibition of the Computer Games Museum. This machine made its big film appearance in 1973 when Shirl used it to pass her time in the Hollywood classic Soylent Green. In 1975, an arcade game scene at the beginning of the film Jaws served as a preview of the events to come in the film.

In War Games from 1983 - also part of the permanent exhibition - gaming became a political thriller. Computer games were already a part of Hollywood before two Hollywood legends, Indiana Jones and E.T., were given official games for their films in November 1982 and the first Hollywood game film adaptation, Super Mario Bros, was released in 1993.

Today, computer games with film licences are an integral part of the games market and game adaptations regularly flicker across the cinema screen. With the release of a new Indiana Jones game and the third Sonic film imminent, the Computer Games Museum looks at the shared history of these two media.

The temporary exhibition Screen/Play takes visitors on a journey through this history and also deals with topics outside of Hollywood. In addition to the influences of East Asian cinema on the visual language of computer games, the Japanese multimedia phenomenon Pokémon and German examples of the media convergence of film and games, a separate station is also dedicated to Indian cinema and its games.

The temporary exhibition can be visited with a valid ticket for the Computer Games Museum at no extra charge. It is recommended to book a time slot in advance via the Internet, as the number of simultaneous visitors is limited.
