The music of David Eisenstadt from the Great Synagogue of Warsaw
The Great Synagogue of Warsaw was opened in 1878 and was an important centre of Jewish life as well as an architectural jewel of the 19th century.
It was famous for its music, especially the choir conducted by David Eisenstadt - composer, conductor and pedagogue.
His works were recently rediscovered and published on the album Music of David Eisenstadt.
At the concert ‘Revived Heritage’ at the Polish Embassy in Berlin, outstanding musicians such as Jakub Stefek, Wojciech Parchem, Lilianna Krych and the March Match Ensemble will interpret his music. An introductory lecture by Dr Stefek will shed light on the history of synagogue music.
Eisenstadt took over the direction of the synagogue choir in 1921, which also characterised secular concerts and was regarded as the pinnacle of Polish vocal art. This tradition came to an end with the destruction of the synagogue in 1943.
82 years later, it was revived in Berlin.
