Piano music four-hands by Schubert, Rachmaninoff and Swerts with Martijn and Stefan Blaak (piano)

The Piano Duo Blaak, with the brothers Martijn and Stefan Blaak, has been delighting audiences for many years with their unique harmony and precision on the piano.

Their close musical connection, combined with outstanding technique and sensitive interpretation, makes every concert a highlight.

The duo's repertoire ranges from classical music to romanticism and modern compositions, bringing works by well-known composers such as Schubert, Brahms and Debussy to life.

Their performances are characterized by energy, joy of playing and perfect synchronicity.

As an outstanding representative of early romanticism, Franz Schubert opens the series with Variations on an Original Theme D813. The characteristics of a march theme leave their mark on this work. Contrapuntal dialogue, pulsating voice leading and delicate pizzicato passages are the defining features - a highly expressive piece that conveys the feeling of endless longing.

With his work 6 Morceaux, Op.11, Sergei Rachmaninoff wrote his only original piece for four hands between 1873 and 1943. In this early work, which was written around 1893, Rachmaninoff's great creative abilities are evident. Characterized by expressiveness and tonal color, he makes full use of all the expressive possibilities of the instrument.

Piet Swerts, born in Belgium in 1960, composed the Suite Vesalius in 3 movements. As a composition for piano four hands, it is entirely in the tradition of its two predecessors, but at the same time represents a climax in terms of time and drama. Moving around tonal centers, surprising twists and powerful ostinatos, it builds up to the point of menace, only to ultimately rise above it. Music that inspires.

Intercultural and interreligious togetherness, juxtaposition of art and heterogeneous reality, the shared experience of something unique for everyone: that is the core idea of this series and this concert.
