Claude Monet (1840–1926) is one of the most famous landscape painters of Impressionism. However, he was also one of the first to recognize the new potential of the modern city as a motif for Impressionist painting and thus paved the way for Gustave Caillebotte and Camille Pissarro, as well as Maximilien Luce.
Josephine Hein, curatorial assistant of the current exhibition on the Impressionist city in the Alte Nationalgalerie, devotes her lecture to Haussmannization.
Using selected works of painting, graphics and photography, she shows how the profound urban development changes in Paris between 1852 and 1870 were documented and reflected upon and how the cityscape ultimately developed into a core theme of Impressionist painting.
