Island tour
The island, known as Kaninchenwerder, had a special attraction for the Prussian King Frederick William II. in 1793, he decided to take over the island. In line with Rousseau's motto "back to nature", the king wanted to create a paradisiacal retreat here. It was then given the name "Royal Peacock Island".
The yearnings of his time, which were characterized by expeditions to new worlds (the Polynesian islands), but also by tracing past, ancient worlds, could find their expression on the 68-hectare Peacock Island.
Peacock Island has been a nature reserve since 1924 in order to give it special protection. It is now registered as a garden monument and is also protected by the UNESCO Berlin-Potsdam World Heritage Site, has been a NATURA 2000 site since 2004 and is protected as a flora and fauna habitat and bird sanctuary.
