As bishop and chairman of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany, Otto Dibelius played a key role in shaping German-speaking Protestantism after 1945.

Even before the Second World War, he was a church reformer, defended the independence of the church vis-à-vis the state and appeared as a publicist.

His positions on anti-Semitism and, from today's perspective, on the ordination of women are questionable.
