Liberation Day - 80 years after the war
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe and the Day of Liberation, the Berlin Underground Museum opens the Fichtebunker from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The former gasometer can look back on around 140 years of history.Until the Nazi era, the building erected in 1883/84 was used for municipal street lighting. In 1940, a six-storey ‘mother and child bunker’ with state-of-the-art technical equipment was installed. In the post-war period, it was used as a reception centre for refugees and bombed-out people, with a prison in the basement. In the 1950s, a retirement home and a homeless shelter were set up in the windowless bunker. From 1963, it was only used to store food reserves for West Berliners.
