guided tour offered by the VHS City-West
The tour in the footsteps of Louise leads to two places in the palace gardens that commemorate the young queen in different ways: the mausoleum with the important grave monument and the Louise Island with the bust of the queen and other sculptures.
The grieving king had the mausoleum built after the queen's sudden death on July 19, 1810. Initially, the only thing inside was the queen's grave monument, made of Carrara marble by Christian Daniel Rauch, a masterpiece of 19th century German sculpture.
On the Louise Island, the king seemed to have a different intention: here, in the midst of nature and the eternal change of seasons, his beloved wife was to be remembered.
The tour lasts about 1.5 hours. Please register directly with the City-West adult education center.
