Costume tour of fashion and austerity measures at the Prussian royal court

While Queen Sophie Dorothea had a great passion for French fashion, from 1725 onward, Frederick William I wore only uniforms. The king abolished his father's opulent Baroque court and decreed austerity in lifestyle and clothing for all officials.

Under Frederick William I, everything military took center stage. He was the first ruler of his time to wear the army uniform, which was not allowed to be removed even when not on duty. To save money, the king chose the simple, dark blue uniform of a Prussian officer instead of a magnificent gown.
