Karl-Heinz Steffens, conductor; Bernstein / Blitzstein
Love and heartbreak in the land of geometry: Marc Blitzstein’s “Parabola and Circula” is finally receiving its world premiere! The possibly only Cubist opera in existence was composed in 1929. The planned premiere in cooperation with the Bauhaus in Dessau however never took place – until now.
The surviving musical material has been prepared in a performance version by Kai Hinrich Müller, Karl-Heinz Steffens, and Boosey & Hawkes, and will be celebrating its world premiere at the Musikfest Berlin.
The opera tells the tragic love story between geometric figures in a world of abstract forms. Its powerful music focuses on the internal conflicts of the modern age – a unique work performed in combination with music by Bernstein, a close companion of Blitzstein, an American composer still largely unknown in Germany.
