Its aim is to critically reflect on human existence in the world, to open up new worlds of experience through new sound visions and to show that undiscovered possibilities with great potential lie beyond the conventional.

What is the role of art when the world is falling apart?
It helps to strengthen resistance and resilience and to counter the flat reality with a rich spiritual world. Art, especially music, shows new, innovative ways of human coexistence and focuses on cooperation rather than confrontation. It not only traces the current situation in the world, but is also able to set new impulses and show new perspectives.
Creativity is a means of processing the events of the world and approaching them with a new attitude.
Programme
The 2025 touring programme of the Polysono ensemble impressively expresses this approach. It includes works by modern classics such as Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis, as well as world premieres of contemporary compositions that critically reflect on the present day.
The programme shows an extraordinary range of instrumentation:
- solo pieces: e.g. flute or cello
- duos: e.g. soprano and baritone or violin and piano
- trios: e.g. flute, clarinet and piano
- quartets: e.g. soprano, bass flute, bass clarinet and cello
- sextet: a grand finale bringing together all the ensemble members.
These diverse line-ups reflect different modes of expression and approach various aspects of human existence in a musical way. The works are multifaceted: they are designed to inspire, stimulate, touch and provoke thought.
The ensemble
The Basel-based Ensemble Polysono specialises in the performance of challenging contemporary music. Every year, it tours Switzerland and major European cities such as Basel, Bern, Zurich, Munich, Berlin, Vienna and London.
The programmes include world premieres as well as revivals of outstanding and relevant works. The focus is always on innovative ideas and concepts that gain their tension through the dialectical examination of different aesthetic points of view.
