For Hildegard, music plays a central role in human life because, as she wrote, the world was created from sound and the human soul is symphonically tuned ("anima symphonialis est").

She considered her songs a divine gift and an expression of her spiritual experiences, not the result of conscious composition in the modern sense. In her time, the boundaries between art, religion, and mysticism were fluid. Hildegard was convinced that humanity could receive the life-affirming, healing power of music.

Gregorian chants and sung psalms in Latin, which were, as they are today, part of everyday life in many monasteries, will also be heard in this concert program.

All songs will be sung and played according to the 12th century neume notation.
