The Belgian private investigator Hercule Poirot wants to travel with the Orient Express from Istanbul to London. But the train is fully booked: all ladies and gentlemen of the world with their servants, and only because the traveling railway director Monsieur Bouc works for him, gets Hercule Poirot still a compartment.
On the drive through Serbia, the train has to stop because of snowdrifts. At the time, an American fellow traveler is killed with 12 stab wounds. Monsieur Bouc asks Poirot to clarify the murder. Because of the snow, no one can leave the train and the telegraph system has failed. For Poirot, this means that he can not obtain information from outside and relies on the witnesses present and the circumstantial evidence available. He finds out: The dead is the criminal Cassetti, who kidnapped and murdered the girl Daisy Armstrong years ago, but was able to escape. Hercule Poirot begins with highly confusing investigations ...
Katharina Thalbach, who has long been associated with the comedy on the Kurfürstendamm, stages Agatha Christie's legendary thriller "Murder in the Orient Express". For the first time Agatha Christie's famous thriller is available in an official stage version.
The fact that the American dramatist Ken Ludwig has worked on the stage version turns out to be a stroke of luck: he skilfully condenses the plot into personnel and dramaturgy and accentuates the comic pointe of criminal history.
"I think what Agatha Christie actually wrote are comedies - or let us say, exemplary crime thrillers, who by their extravagant characters have a penchant for comedy. The comedy is almost inevitable in these characters, "he says.
