Exhibition and Tour
How is green hydrogen produced? How can we heat with geothermal energy? What happens in a fusion reactor? And how is the energy transition in Germany progressing?
The exhibition in the Science Year 2025 - Future Energy addresses these questions.
Whether in the home, in transport, in the office or in industry: we need energy in almost all areas of our everyday lives. However, climate change and limited resources present us with major challenges. What does a sustainable, reliable and affordable energy supply look like? What storage technologies do we need for the energy system of the future? How can we all help shape the energy transition? Scientists are researching these questions in a wide range of projects on the topic of future energy.
Design an intelligent power grid, feel the heat inside the earth, recognise your own energy consumption on the internet or experience the city of the future: Visitors can get hands-on with around 30 exhibits and explore the energy supply of tomorrow. The exhibition invites visitors to consider not only technological but also social, ecological and economic aspects of the energy transition and to take a look at Germany's course towards climate neutrality by 2045. The exhibits come from research projects from all over Germany and provide insights into current energy research. There will also be a varied programme of events and school workshops in some of the tour cities. The exhibition is recommended for visitors aged twelve and over.
The ship
The MS Wissenschaft is a 100 metre long inland cargo ship that used to travel on European waterways with coal and containers. Since 2002, the exhibition ship has been touring Germany every summer as a floating science centre as part of the Science Years. The ship is powered by GtL fuel, which is more environmentally friendly than marine diesel. A photovoltaic system on deck supplies the entire exhibition with electricity.
The 2025 tour
From Berlin, the ship travels to Brandenburg and from there on to Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and Hesse. In mid-August, the exhibition ship will reach Bavaria, where this year's tour of Germany will end in Straubing in mid-September. In total, the MS Wissenschaft will visit 29 cities in nine federal states in Germany this year.
Clients and partners
The MS Wissenschaft is touring Germany on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Wissenschaft im Dialog (WiD) is realising the exhibition with the support of the science organisations behind WiD. The exhibits come directly from research and are provided by institutes of the Fraunhofer Society, Helmholtz Association, Leibniz Association, Max Planck Society and DFG-funded projects, universities and other partners.
Opening hours of the exhibition
The exhibition is usually open daily from 10 am to 6.30 pm. School classes are welcome by appointment from 9 am. Admission is free. Further information and details can be found on Berlin
