SPIELRAUM – the Days of the Independent Performing Arts Community in Berlin
As a popular theater, the Globe Berlin attaches particular importance to a low-threshold offering. This is reflected in its popular prices, bilingual Shakespeare performances, timelessly modern material and translations, introductions and post-show discussions.
Under the season's motto “Power and Powerlessness”, the moving themes of manipulation and rebellion are at the heart of the stage action until September 13, thus addressing the tensions of the current world situation.
In A Midsummer Night's Dream, four young lovers flee the strict laws of Athens and lose their way in a forest full of ghosts and elves; here they are drawn into the maelstrom of their desires and passions, dream of heaven and fall into the abyss. On Midsummer Night, the spirits of nature whirl everything upside down and play tricks on the humans, destroying all the rules and reshuffling the cards. A sensual, turbulent round dance that contrasts the uniform civil society with the exotic jungle. The ensemble becomes a band and accompanies the play with magical live music.
Shakespeare's most frequently performed comedy is also the most frequently misunderstood. Mathias Schönsee's new production at the Globe Berlin leaves the romantic, explanatory performance tradition behind, as well as the burlesque. Here is a “Midsummer Night's Dream” that is closer to the author.
