Painting and drawing
With the exhibition Map and Territory, Matthias Esch presents an impressive collection of paintings and drawings.
The works of the Berlin-based artist invite us to rediscover emotional spaces and explore the dialogue between reality and interpretation.
‘These paintings draw their power from the contrast between lively, expressive painting and strict geometric patterns. The one forms the basis of each work, the other lies above it as a strict system of order. In a symbolic sense, this contrast symbolises the tension between the individual's desire for expression and freedom and the controlling systems of society, from the family to language and the state.
In relation to the individual, the juxtaposition can also be understood as the difference between the seething, instinctive unconscious, the id or the dream on the one hand and the conscious, controlling ego on the other. The one is characterised by the colour red, the other by the ‘spiritual’ silver sheen of mother-of-pearl that is added to the colour. It is not least this lustre that constitutes the decisive aspect of this art beyond all theory: it is vital, luminous painting.’ (Dr Ernst A. Busche)
