Performance by laborgras & Ensemble CONTINUUM
In their new performance "A Masque for the Multiverse", which will premiere at the Radialsystem at the turn of the year, the ensembles laborgras and CONTINUUM combine the music of the contemporary American composer Shara Nova with the "Masques" by William Lawes from the 17th century.
The dancers and musicians conceive - with an unusual spatial concept and for an audience in motion - the contemporary version of a masque: a revolutionary and historically extraordinary event at the court of James I and Charles I with music and dance. Half costume party, half participatory musical theater performance, the evenings were probably openly held under homosexual or queer auspices.
Today largely unknown composers such as Henry and William Lawes wrote the music for these very colorful and emotionally charged happenings and thus created a kind of proto-foundation for today's camp culture.
In her work cycle "You Us We All" for baroque instruments and vocal voices, composer Shara Nova from Detroit devotes herself to the fluid transition between contemporary and baroque music.
Despite the 400 years that lie between the two composers, their works, aesthetics and performance practices show unexpected parallels. Both deal with themes of identity and transformation - across eras.
Their music invites you to broaden your horizons and question everyday beliefs: "What is our life? What purpose does beauty serve?"
The production with which laborgras opens the work cycle "Begegnung" on the occasion of its 30th anniversary takes up the question of an open society and creates an environment that wants to counteract the everyday with sensuality, irony and humor: a real open space.
