Lecture by Olaf A. Schmitt (Berlin State Opera)

This contemporary opera is based on a dramatic model that is a golden moment in 20th century theater. The famous Hungarian composer György Kurtág experienced a performance of the play "Endgame" by the important Irish playwright Samuel Beckett towards the end of the 1950s and worked on this material for decades.

His opera only premiered in 2018 as a commission from La Scala in Milan. In his musical language, Kurtág is closely based on Beckett's original French text, to which he opens up a fascinating sound space with his subtle instrumentation. This also reflects Beckett's preference for circus, amusement parks and clowning, which Johannes Erath traces in his current production at the Berlin State Opera.

Olaf A. Schmitt studied musicology as well as theater, film and media studies. After working as an opera and concert dramaturge in Heidelberg, at the Bavarian State Opera and at the Bregenz Festival, among others, he is now Artistic Director of the Kassel Music Days and Lead Dramaturg at the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden, where he is overseeing this current production.
