Between tradition and modernity.
The Wilmersdorf mosque and its architectural neighbours.
Includes an exclusive tour of the mosque's interior
The mosque in Brienner Straße in Wilmersdorf is a special place of remembrance.
It is the oldest surviving mosque in Germany and is still used by the community today.
The road from Fehrbelliner Platz to the mosque was the scene of some extremely unusual building projects in the mid-1920s. They characterised the ‘better neighbourhood’ and testified to a new zeitgeist and the curiosity of the educated middle classes. We learn about a sacred building - which only exists in photographs - that still surprises us architecturally today, and discover a residential building by Hans Scharoun that illustrates the progressive times with unusual ideas.
The largest crematorium in Berlin at the time is a domed building with a columbarium. The highlight of the tour is a visit to the Wilmersdorf Mosque with a comprehensive insight into the historical background to its construction and the interior of the rooms.
You will also get to know another extremely unusual religious building virtually, which unfortunately no longer exists. It was just as striking in this area as the mosque itself, was built at almost the same time and is likely to come as a surprise to many participants.
Perhaps even more surprising: the even larger, equally splendid mosque project in Charlottenburg at the time - on Lietzensee.

The Wilmersdorf Mosque
It is sometimes self-confidently referred to as the ‘Berlin Mosque’. And: it is one of the most beautiful mosques anywhere. Worldwide. At least for me.
It is located on a corner plot of land. And yet it is simply overlooked by many people driving past.
Those who do discover the Wilmersdorf mosque usually have reservations. So beautiful and yet so strange.
