Cemeteries are places of burial and remembrance, important habitats for flora and fauna, and popular green recreational areas for residents of the surrounding neighborhoods. As part of the Berlin Sustainable Development Funding Program (BENE), approximately 1.2 hectares of cemetery land no longer needed for burials have been transformed into completely new opportunities for use and participation in the areas of environmental education, nature conservation, art, and culture.
