Reading, music, live radio play and exhibition

The novel "Väter" by Paul Brodowsky examines how toxic imprints are passed on between generations. The autofictional first-person narrator sheds light on violent but also empowering moments from his own childhood and conducts detailed interviews with his own father (who was born in 1933) to find out more about growing up under National Socialism.

At the same time, he describes how he dealt with his own children, with a subtle focus on moments of impatience and irascibility that repeatedly break through in moments of crisis.

Paul Brodowsky will read from the radio play version of the novel and composer and sound artist Milena Kipfmüller will add a musical and acoustic dimension to the multi-sensory performance.

The music, sounds and reading text will be mixed live. In addition, there will be image compositions by Nicolas Wollnik, who has created a series of images entitled "sites/sights" based on research photos of the novel, which work with double exposure techniques and open up poetic-visual spaces of association during the performance. "sites/sights" will also be on display throughout the evening as a small exhibition. The result is a dense literary performance between reading, live radio play and exhibition.

Paul Brodowsky lives in Berlin and writes prose, drama, radio plays and essays. He has received numerous prizes and scholarships, including the Frankfurt Authors' Foundation Prize and the Nicolas Born Prize. His best-known plays include "Regen in Neukölln" and "Intensivtäter". His debut novel "Väter" was published in 2023.

Milena Kipfmüller grew up bilingually between Germany and Brazil. Studied Applied Theater Studies in Giessen and Paris with Heiner Goebbels, among others.

She works at the interface between music theater, radio plays and sound art. Multiple awards for radio plays, including the Hörspielpreis der Kriegsblinden. Part of the music theater collective Sounding Situations since 2014.

A note on (not only) our own behalf: Finding a parking space around the Lettrétage is really no fun. If you don't use your car to get here, you'll save yourself a lot of stress and bad moods - and help us to make the event more sustainable bit by bit.
