Fantastic opera in five acts (1881)
Jacques Offenbach left behind an impressive musical legacy with over 100 stage works that captivate audiences with their wit, satirical edge, and unmistakable esprit. At the end of his illustrious career in Paris, he devoted himself to what was arguably his most ambitious musical theater piece: the opéra fantastique Les Contes d'Hoffmann, based on a play from 1881.
The audience is immersed in a world full of bizarre characters, enigmatic events, and mysterious powers – masterfully captured in Offenbach's multifaceted and gripping music. At the center is the title character, inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann, who is torn between artistic creativity, romantic passion, and dark intrigue.
With a sumptuous production by director Lydia Steier and a striking musical interpretation conducted by Bertrand de Billy, Les Contes d'Hoffmann is an unforgettable experience for all the senses.
