Concert with the Ensemble Art d’Echo
When one thinks of Brandenburg-Prussia and music, names like Frederick II, J.J. Quantz, or C.P.E. Bach immediately spring to mind. They all represent 18th-century music. Before that, there seems to have been nothing of musical significance in Berlin-Brandenburg—a complete misconception!
The Brandenburg Court Orchestra of the early 17th century rivaled any court orchestra of the time in size and importance. Famous figures like William Brade and Nicolaus Zangius were sought after by the princes of Europe—they served as Kapellmeister at the Electorate of Brandenburg's court. Under the so-called Great Elector in the mid-17th century, the court became a mecca for gambists. The elite of the gambist world met here and stayed for many years. Entire generations of gambists were trained at the Berlin court, and students even came from abroad to study with Walter Rowe and Dietrich Stoeffken.
The program “Golden Age in Brandenburg” is accordingly ambitious, versatile and diverse – from polyphonic viol consort with harp accompaniment to solo suites, from completely unknown pieces (world premiere CD recording) to evergreens, from contrapuntal-experimental to dance music, everything is included.
