The Potsdam Orchestra Week, along with the Lehnin Summer Music Festival, is also celebrating its 50th anniversary. The Potsdam Orchestra Week has been a part of the Summer Music Festival from the very beginning.
This year's program includes three works, all lesser-known but nonetheless very interesting and varied:
the "Scherzo Fantastique" by Dvořák's son-in-law Josef Suk; a "Double Bass Concerto" by Giovanni Petrosius Bottesini, the "Paganini of the double bass," and finally, the "Symphony No. 1" by Carl Nielsen, who is venerated in Denmark as a "national saint."
The Potsdam Orchestra Week is an association of amateur musicians from all over Germany and abroad. During the annual week of rehearsals at the Evangelisches Gymnasium Potsdam-Hermannswerder, demanding symphonic works are worked on under the expert direction of Matthias Salge and immediately afterwards performed in Potsdam and the surrounding area.
