Named after the storied neighborhood in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad where calypso was born, Kobo Town has been described as “a heady mix of lilting calypsonian wit, dancehall reggae and trombone-heavy horns” (Guardian) and a “unique, transnational Mixture of rhythm, poetry and activist journalism” (Exclaim!).

Since forming in 2005, the group has brought their distinctive calypso and ska-inspired sound to audiences around the world.

The band is led by Drew Gonsalves, who moved from Trinidad to Canada as a teenager and rediscovered the joys of old calypso, ska and roots reggae in his new home through old records he found in the bargain bins of thrift stores.

A songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist, his music has been covered by many other artists including Carlos Santana, Manu Chao and Calypso Rose.

Kobo Town's songs are at once brooding and happy, poetic and danceable. Rooted in the Caribbean's rich tradition of musical storytelling, they are delivered with an indomitable energy that has delighted audiences from Montreal to Malaysia and from Havana to Berlin.

To date, the group has released three albums - their debut Independence, the chart-topping Jumbie in the Jukebox and the Juno Award-winning Where The Galleon Sank - and will release their fourth effort, Carnival of the Ghosts, in spring 2022.

Once again they collaborate with Montreal-based label Stonetree Records and Ivan Duran, the idiosyncratic Belizean producer who has produced more than half a dozen albums.
